Quit or Stick?

If you’ve ever felt like quitting because you’re not making money online then maybe you need a little inspiration from someone who understands perseverance better than most –Seth Godin.

Seth Godin has authored many best-selling books, including Permission Marketing, Purple Cow, Unleashing the Idea Virus, and All Marketers Are Liars. In one of his latest creations, called The Dip, he unveils a sensible approach to analyzing your success and progress.

It’s almost pocket-sized and a mere 80-pages long, but it packs a powerful message that not all marketers need to keep going if it isn’t working. It’s okay to quit, but you need to know when it’s going to better your success and when it would be wiser to stay the path.

Seth starts out teaching you why it’s important to be the best in your industry, in your market, and in your niche. This is where the dip starts out in life – you choose a path and to get to the pit stop, your going to have to endure some potholes along the way.

Some people will pass the dips with ease, like a driver behind the wheel of a powerful truck. Others will get stuck, spin their wheels, and give up. Some settle for where they’re at and never move anywhere.

Seth says that society rewards the exceptional. How can you be an exceptional marketer? You can adhere to ethical marketing practices. You can create top quality products and provide excellent customer service. You can think outside the box and attempt something unique.

The Dip will happen to you, if it hasn’t happened already. You got into internet marketing with excitement about the income possibilities and enthusiasm to work for yourself.

Then the Dip happens. You’re putting in the effort but not seeing the results. Think of the dip as the velvet rope keeping you out of a nightclub. You were all excited getting dressed up and going to the club, but once you got there, the bouncer said, “Sorry, you can’t come in.”

Will you wait it out and sweet-talk your way through the door or leave and go to another club? People who get in don’t follow the rules – they make new ones. They work the bouncer until he caves in.

It’s an opportunity to become better at what you do, not just get through it all. Be aware of your dips so that you can make a decision about pushing through or quitting before you waste time. If you recognize yourself as a serial quitter, then it’s time to read The Dip and get your focus back on track.
